How is Hearing Loss Measured

Hearing Loss is is measured in decibles but is more commonly described in terms of categories of impairment for hearing conversational speech.

0-20 dB - Normal Hearing Loss

21-45 dB - Mild Hearing Loss Damage - A person in this category would have trouble hearing soft speech. Voices will sound muffled. Hearing Aids can assist with mild hearing loss.

46-60 dB - Moderate Hearing Loss Damage - A person in this category would find it difficult to understand conversational speech especially if there was background noise such as in a restaraunt or at a sporting event. The volume on the TV and radio would usually be turned up to high.

61-75 dB - Moderately Severe Hearing Loss Damage- A person in this category would need a hearing aid to hear conversational speech.

76-90 dB - Profound Hearing Loss - A person in this category would only have limited benefit from wearing hearing aids.

91+ dB - Hearing Loss Damage - A person in this category is in the same situation as those in the Profound Hearing Loss Damage category but the limited benefit of wearing a hearing aid would be more inconsistent.
